Fellow knitter and I just had to share that there's a technique for joining yarn that leaves NO TAILS to weave in and I just discovered it myself recently. Here's a link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YF5GtMmV9AA

Weaving ends in is the worst, hope this helps. (also loved your piece.)

Wow! Thank you! I have lots to do, still, on that scarf, and will probably try BOTH of these joining methods. Currently I'm out of town..making a speech in Scottsdale, Arizona, then returning to Maine after it shovels itself out from the snowstorm. So my knitting will be waiting there for me when I get home . I have saved your link.and am quite excited about giving it a try!

Dear Lois, we met some years ago, possibly at the Tucson Literary Festival? I didn’t know you were also a knitter. I loved reading this. Thank you.

Knitter, yes. But I seem unable to follow knitting directions and am in awe of those who can/do. My alternative is to make-it-up-as-I-go-along, as I showed in this photo.

Possibly Tucson! I was there twice in recent years.

This was pure joy to read. Once again, just this week, I praised your works to a class of undergraduate elementary education majors, instead of the fifth graders I taught for 31 years. The education majors could not believe when I told them you actually emailed me back on several occasions when my 5th graders had questions after finishing reading Number the Stars. Thank you for this, and I look forward to your new book.

The “He had a hat!” joke was one of my father’s favorites, and mine as well. Stay warm!

How many ways can one write the Scottish Medical School joke to match the punchline?

Lois Lowry's avatar

A zillion. Also, I will add...as I told him many many times, probably occasionally in a caustic tone:...It could be ANY medical school. Why does it have to be Scottish? (The answer, which he would not admit to, was that he just wanted a chance to show off his mastery of the accent)

In the late 80's, I went to an event where actors performed early versions of plays with the express purpose of getting feedback for the writers from the audience. All I remember about the first play was that it was a romance set in the vegetable section of a grocery store. All I remember about the second one is that the playwright said that she had made the main character Scottish so she could use the line "What bonny, boney knees." That might tell you a lot about the play.
